Patricians were at the top of the food chain in the Roman Empire. They were the elite aristocracy, and were regarded as such. Patricians originated as the original founding fathers of Rome, and their lineage could be traced back to the times of Romulus. Because they were so prestigious, they were often striving for high ranking positions such as generals, senators, or other positions in the government. Patricians wore a purple stripe down the side of their clothing to signify their rank. However by the end of the Roman empire, struggles between patricians and plebeians had caused differences between the two to lessen, which led to the loss of distinction between patricians and plebeians.
Wealth
Patricians were very wealthy. Most patricians owned a luxurious house at Rome, a farm in the country, and a number of villas and houses at more pleasant and placid spots than Rome. In the past, the patronage system granted them huge amounts of wealth and influence with the common people, and allowed them to elevate the Roman empire to great heights, in addition to elevating themselves as well. Patricians and their relatives were able to indulge themselves, and strive in the world without worry. Because of their enormous wealth and power, they often lived in palaces, had all their materials ready for them, and could spend their day doing whatever they desired. They also owned several slaves on top of their extravagant lives.
Political Life
Despite this, patricians were still in places of great suspense and drama. Although they weren't fighting for survival or money, patricians were fighting for power and influence in the Roman empire. Patricians were already at the top of the social ladder, and as a result, only strived towards political of military positions. Because they weren't guaranteed spots in the senate, or military, they often had to backstab fellow competitors and friends to get what they wanted. It was survival of the fittest. Once patricians start to get in the game of politics, if they lose, they could lose everything.
Daily Life
Because patricians were in positions of great power and affluence, they are able to get a head start, and an early advantage in life. Boys in a patrician family would receive the best education possible. They would focus on the liberal arts, Greek, as well as Latin, and law. Patricians made sure that their kids were prepared for life as soon as they entered politics. In addition to this, patricians believed in making their sons soldiers so that they would have experience before going off to politics. A successful and average patrician would follow the patronage system. He would wake up, and take requests from the common people in return for their help. After this, he would engage in legal activities, or sit in the senate. Patricians had a relatively comfortable life.
